When homeowners ask me about radiators, they typically assume all radiators are broadly the same. They are not. The type, size, and position of a radiator makes a meaningful difference to how effectively a room heats up and how efficiently your boiler operates. Getting the selection wrong means cold spots, wasted energy costs, or a radiator that simply looks out of place in the room.
The standard choice in the majority of UK homes. Single panel (K1) radiators are slim and well suited to smaller rooms or hallways. Double panel (K2) radiators feature two panels with convector fins between them, producing considerably more heat from the same wall space. They are the most practical choice for living rooms and bedrooms.
Column radiators carry a traditional, elegant appearance that suits period properties particularly well, though they are increasingly popular in contemporary homes as a design statement. Available in both horizontal and vertical orientations, they typically hold more water than panel radiators. This means they take slightly longer to heat up but retain warmth for longer once at temperature, making them especially effective with older, lower-temperature heating systems.
An excellent solution where horizontal wall space is limited. A tall, narrow vertical radiator can deliver substantial heat output without requiring the same wall run as a conventional model. They work particularly well in hallways, bathrooms, and kitchens where space is at a premium.
Designed specifically for bathrooms, towel rails serve a dual purpose: warming the room and keeping towels dry and fresh. They are available in heated water versions connected to your central heating, and electric versions for year-round use. For a bathroom used throughout the year, a dual-fuel towel rail switchable to electric in the warmer months is well worth considering.
This is the element most homeowners underestimate. A radiator that is undersized for a room will run constantly and never quite achieve a comfortable temperature. One that is oversized costs more than necessary and may cause the boiler to short cycle, reducing its efficiency and lifespan.
The calculation is straightforward. Multiply the length, width, and height of the room in metres to find the volume. For a well-insulated modern home, allow approximately 75 to 85 watts of heat output per cubic metre. For an older property with poorer insulation, increase that figure by 15 to 20 per cent. Radiators sold in the UK display their output in BTUs or watts, and reputable suppliers provide sizing calculators to help you select the right model.
As a working example: a living room measuring 5m by 4m by 2.5m has a volume of 50 cubic metres. At 80 watts per cubic metre, you would need a radiator rated at approximately 4,000 watts, or two smaller units on opposing walls for a more even distribution of heat throughout the space.
The traditional position is beneath a window, and there is sound reasoning behind this convention. Windows are the coldest part of most external walls, and positioning a radiator below one creates a warm air current that counteracts cold draughts. In rooms without a suitable window position, placing a radiator on an external wall achieves a similar effect.
Avoid positioning radiators behind large sofas or inside deep alcoves where airflow is restricted. For L-shaped rooms or open-plan spaces, a single radiator is rarely sufficient. Two smaller units on different walls will heat the space far more evenly than one large radiator concentrated in a corner.
