Sludge and rust build up inside your central heating system over time, reducing efficiency and causing cold spots on radiators. A powerflush clears it all out. But is it always necessary?
A powerflush is a thorough deep clean of your entire central heating system. Using a specialist high-velocity pump, a chemical cleaning solution is forced through the pipework, radiators, and boiler, dislodging and flushing out the accumulated sludge, rust particles, and debris that build up over years of normal use. On an average-sized home, the process typically takes a full working day.
Central heating systems are predominantly made of steel, and over time the water circulating inside the system causes the metal to corrode slightly. That corrosion produces a dense, black, muddy deposit known as magnetite, or simply heating sludge. Without a corrosion inhibitor in the system and regular maintenance, this sludge circulates freely around the pipework before settling in the coolest areas: typically the bottom of radiators and the heat exchanger inside the boiler itself.
Not always. If your system is relatively modern, has consistently had inhibitor added, and all radiators heat evenly and promptly, a powerflush is unlikely to be required. However, if you are having a new boiler installed onto an older system, most manufacturers and certainly my own professional recommendation would strongly advise a flush at the same time.
Fitting a new boiler onto a contaminated system is one of the most common causes of premature boiler failure. On some models, it will also void the manufacturer's warranty. It is a cost that is genuinely worth incurring at the point of installation.
I connect a powerful flushing machine to the central heating system, typically at the pump head or a radiator connection point. A chemical cleaning agent is introduced to break down the sludge, and the machine forces water through the system at high velocity and in alternating directions to dislodge all deposits. Each radiator is isolated and flushed individually. The process continues until the outgoing water runs completely clear, at which point a corrosion inhibitor is added to protect the system going forward.
A typical home with eight to twelve radiators requires a full day. Larger properties or heavily contaminated systems may take longer. In most cases, the system can be used again the same evening.
